NOVEMBER 15 VIDEO CONFERENCE

It was fantastic to have another video connection between St. John's and Marlborough Girls' College on 25th November 2015. In particular we enjoyed seeing Jeff Sewell who has visited Marlborough (England) twice in recent years, and chatting with the girls of MGC.

The 40 minute session flew by as conversation jumped from serious issues such as recent world events to more light-hearted topics like music choice, the weather and obviously the Rugby World Cup! Naturally, we were very pleased to be Honorary All Blacks supporters and the shirt given to St. John's was definitely on show!

MGC left us with a serious invite...can we please visit them in NZ!

Big events and Visitors to Marlborough Girls' College

This term we have had a number of big events in our school. Our first was the annual Shakespeare festival. For this we send a group (pictured below) of both Girls and Boys' College students to our capital city (Wellington) for a competetive performance. We have a proud history in this competition including a number of our girls who have won sections of the event and travelled to the Globe in London to perform there.

We also celebrated our annual Spirit Week where we decorate teh school and celebrate all the awesome things that happen around the school! Students give certificates to teachers for various positive reasons and seniors students run competitions and events at lunchtimes and after school.  Students dress in school colours and some staff dress in School uniform!

SKI TRIP 2015 - ALPE D'HUEZ, FRANCE

This year we had another fantastic ski trip in France with 90 students and 13 adults. The conditions were really varied as this year has been a poor season fro snow, but we then had over 48 hours of the most heavy snow at the end of the week.

We use a blog for the week so that family and friends back home can see what we are doing on a daily basis, so rather than put more photos here, perhaps you might like to check out this link:

Hopefully from this you can see that we do a lot of other activities in the evening too!

ANOTHER NZ VISITOR

AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND VISITOR!

On Wednesday 1st October, the Vice-Principal of Ormiston Senior College in Auckland, New Zealand visited St Johns. The visit was prompted by her interest in international school teaching methods and environments, which also linked in with her sabbatical. Throughout the meeting with the College Captains and Head Boy/Girl we spoke about the way our school was run and how effective that was. One of the main points raised was how much input the students had in our school and its changes, frankly, a lot more than Diana’s school back in Auckland! We also spoke about the teachers and their professional relationship they hold with all of their students to provide the best education possible, something which we all agreed on.

As that meeting came to a quick finish, the next meeting with Global Ambassadors began. Throughout the meeting, the topic of conversation changed to our global portfolios and how they are useful when applying for sixth form, colleges, university and finally jobs. This was something completely new to Diana as her school has no such thing of a global portfolio, or anything to put certain achievements in. Although, we didn’t only speak about the differences, the similarities were a huge topic to cover in such a small amount of time. The biggest similarity was the D of E programme. We found that this programme was a part of the curriculum back in Auckland, a small difference to the optional choice in St Johns. Our final point raised was the wide range of facilities St Johns provided for all students; such as cameras for photography, interactive white boards in most classrooms, recording studios and sporting equipment. This particular conversation started a huge difference realisation of how Diana’s school doesn’t have classrooms; only large rooms to hold many classrooms at one time (just like our enterprise suite). And guess what? Their students also wish they could wear blazers, another very odd point!

Visit to St John's

Dear Dr Hazlewood, Mr Nicholls and Global Ambassadors,

Thank you so much for hosting me on my recent visit to St John's College. It is so heartening to see your enthusiasm for international understanding through intellectual debate and exchange. I thoroughly enjoyed my time spent with you discussing the Link shared with Marlborough Girls College here in New Zealand and look forward to those links strengthening with time.

Kind regards,

Jeff Sewell

JEFF SEWELL VISIT

It was a great honour and pleasure for us to host Jeff Sewell again at St. John's and in Marlborough. This is the second visit by Jeff and in his previous trip it was his initiative that managed to link the two schools together.

Whilst we only had a short time with his company, again Jeff showed us his warm and positive nature and several students were able to meet him and tell him about the links between SJ and MGC. More importantly, he managed to bring a gift half-way around the world from Mr Adamson which we received with open arms! After our humorous video conference exchanges where rugby often becomes a topic of conversation we were hugely honoured to receive a NZ All Blacks shirt!!!!
